Gender Identity

By Teacher Annie Castle Deckert

Every child just wants to be loved and accepted for who she or he is.  Teachers and parents at Explorer work hard to make it a place where every child can feel comfortable, happy, confident, and joyful.  But, are we doing that well enough?  In an ideal world, it would be a "given" that children and adults should feel free to just be themselves, but unfortunately, we don't live in an ideal world.

This interesting and thought-provoking article speaks to the issue of gender identity, an area of acceptance that we don't often talk about.  It describes a teacher's experience of dealing with gender stereotypes in the classroom.  After you read it, let us know your thoughts!  Our community is strengthened by sharing and discussion, and we all have lots to learn from each other about children and parenting.
